Why AI Headshots Sometimes Get Red-Eye

You know that flashbulb pop from a disposable camera at a school dance? The red-eye effect is the same science, just digital. Light from a bright source—like the AI’s simulated studio flash—zooms straight into the eye, hits the blood-rich retina at the back, and bounces right back out as a crimson glow. It’s physics, not a demonic possession. The AI, for all its cleverness, sometimes fails to interpret this bounce-back as a flaw. It just sees “red pixels in the eye area” and assumes that’s correct. I’ve seen it happen most often in headshots where the subject’s eyes are looking directly at the virtual camera lens, giving that light a perfect highway in and out.

Find the Portraze Red-Eye Correction Tool

Open your edited headshot file. Look at the toolbar on the left side of your screen—it’s usually a vertical column of icons. Scan for a symbol that looks like a single eye, or sometimes an eye with a diagonal line through it. I use a simple system: “Smith_J_Headshot_v2.jpg” or “Smith_J_Headshot_final.jpg”. Choose the highest quality JPEG setting—usually a slider that goes from 1 to 100 or 12; set it to 90 or above. This keeps the file sharp for LinkedIn or a company website without creating a massive 50MB file. If you need a transparent background for a badge or poster, save a separate PNG version. Now you have a clean original, a corrected version, and a professional image ready to send.
