Start with the Right Raw Image

Now, take a soft, low-opacity brush (I use 5-10% flow) to dodge (lighten) and burn (darken). You are not painting color; you are sculpting light and shadow to match the rest of the skin's luminosity.
Here’s the key: you must work across the pattern borders. Let's say a patch of vitiligo on the cheek catches more light and looks brighter than the surrounding skin. Instead of trying to darken the entire patch, you gently burn just the brightest highlights within it. Conversely, you might dodge a shadow that falls awkwardly across a pattern's edge. This technique preserves the pattern's exact shape and its natural texture while harmonizing the light. It’s time-consuming, but it’s the difference between a photo that looks real and one that looks retouched.
Avoid the Blur and Clone Stamp Trap
What's the fastest way to make vitiligo patterns look fake and painted-on? Reach for the Clone Stamp or the Blur Tool directly on the image. I watched a junior retoucher try to "clean up" the edges of a pattern on a forehead. With each clone stamp click, the unique, feathery border became a hard, stamped line. These tools are for removing a stray hair or a temporary blemish, not for redefining permanent skin characteristics. You must inspect your work at full resolution. Zoom in until one eye fills your screen. Scroll slowly across the jawline, the temples, the neck. What are you looking for? Three things: texture continuity, border integrity, and color seams.
Does the skin grain flow naturally from pigmented area to non-pigmented area, or is there a sudden shift to a waxy or cloned texture? Does the edge of a pattern still have its natural, irregular, soft border, or does it now look like it was cut out with scissors? Is there a faint, halo-like line of color where you worked the tones? This is your quality control. It takes five minutes and saves you from a recall. Your subject knows their skin better than anyone; they will see a seam you missed at 50% zoom.
So, what's the practical takeaway? Your editing should feel like you're gently guiding the light, not repainting the person. When you succeed, the portrait feels like them, not a version of them with their vitiligo "corrected." That authenticity is what builds trust, and that trust is what makes a great headshot.
