Spot color banding on your office monitor before it's too late

Your office screen can hide ugly color stripes in your new headshot. Use these simple checks to see what recruiters will really see. I'll show you how to spot the problem in two minutes.

Set up your screen for the right test

You need to see the problem on its home turf. First, turn off any "blue light filter" or "night mode" on your monitor—that orange tint hides the truth. Set your screen brightness to about 70%. That's your typical, comfortable office level; too bright can wash out subtle flaws, too dim can hide them.

Now, open a pure, solid color image. Don't just stare at your desktop wallpaper. Find a test image online, or create one yourself in any basic photo editor: a simple rectangle filled with a gentle gradient from, say, a sky blue to a deeper navy. This is your canvas. The most critical areas are smooth transitions in shadows and skies—that's where banding loves to live.

Zoom in on the risky areas first

Don't look at the whole picture. I learned this from editing thousands of portraits. If you want to find a stray hair or a skin flaw, you zoom to 100% view. Do the same here. Click on that gradient image and zoom your viewer until you're looking at just a portion of the color sweep.

Specifically, look at the mid-tones. The transition from a light gray to a medium gray is a classic failure point for cheaper office monitors. Move your zoom window slowly across the gradient. If your monitor is prone to banding, you won't have to search for long. It will appear where the color should be silky smooth.

Look for stripes, not just smooth color

Banding doesn't look like a slight imperfection. It looks like distinct, separate bands of color—like a poorly printed poster where you can count the layers of ink. Instead of a seamless fade from blue to black, you'll see six obvious stripes of slightly different blues.

Here’s a concrete example from my work. I once edited a senior portrait with a gorgeous, muted sunset sky. On my calibrated studio monitor, the colors melted into each other. On the client's office monitor, the sky had five distinct, hard bands of orange and pink. He thought I'd done a bad edit. The monitor was the culprit, creating lines that didn't exist in the file.

Your task is to spot those artificial lines. They are a sign your monitor cannot display the full range of color information in a modern photo or design file.

Don't make this common monitor mistake

The biggest error is assuming factory settings are fine. They almost never are for precision work. People crank up the "digital vibrance" or "contrast" sliders in their monitor's menu, thinking it makes colors pop. What it actually does is crush the subtle gradients, making banding worse and destroying shadow detail.

Leave your monitor on its "sRGB" or "Standard" preset if it has one. Avoid "Vivid", "Dynamic", or "Game" modes at all costs. Those presets are for watching movies, not judging color. If you've been using a "vibrant" setting for years, switching back will make the screen look dull for a day. Trust me, your eyes will adjust, and you'll start seeing what's really in your files.

Get a second opinion from your phone

Your smartphone is a surprisingly reliable referee. Modern phone screens are generally excellent. Pull up that same gradient test image on your phone and place it right next to your monitor.

Compare the same section. Does your phone screen show a smooth, continuous fade where your monitor shows jagged stripes? If yes, you have confirmed the monitor is the problem. This isn't a perfect calibration test, but it's a fantastic, immediate reality check. I do this quick phone check every time I have to work on an unfamiliar screen at a client's office.

Another trick: tilt your head or change your viewing angle slightly. On low-quality TN panel monitors, banding can appear or disappear dramatically with just a small head movement. If the stripes shift when you move, that's a hardware limitation you can't fix with settings.

Spotting this issue early saves you from approving work that looks flawed everywhere else. It tells you when you need to lean on a better screen for final approvals, or when to question a strange color shift in a file. Knowing your monitor's limits is the first, most practical step toward making sure what you see is what everyone else gets.
