Stop Fluorescent Light Flicker with Your Camera's E-Shutter

Fluorescent lights can ruin headshots with weird color bands. Your camera's electronic shutter is the fix. Here's how to find it and use it to get clean, consistent shots every time.

The Problem: Color Bands in Office Light

You’re in a conference room, your client looks great, and you fire off a dozen shots. On the back of your camera, you see it: weird green or magenta stripes cutting across their face and suit. It looks like a bad filter. That’s fluorescent or LED flicker. These lights don’t shine steadily; they pulse 120 times per second in the US, 100 times in Europe. Your mechanical shutter’s moving slit captures those pulses at different stages, creating colored bands. It ruins shots. Find Your Camera's Electronic Shutter Setting

Do a quick three-shot test: one at 1/125th, one at 1/60th, one at 1/200th. All three should be clean. If they are, you’ve solved it.

The Common Mistake: Using a High Shutter Speed

Here’s where people trip up. The electronic shutter fixes the color banding, but it introduces a new rule: watch your shutter speed. If you shoot faster than 1/125th of a second under artificial light, you might get a different, subtler banding or weird artifacts. Why? You’re capturing such a thin slice of time that you can catch the light in its “off” phase between pulses. Stick to 1/100th or 1/125th for safety. This is non-negotiable.
