Why Glare Happens in Studio Lighting
Think of your glasses lens as a smooth, hard pond. My studio strobes are the sun. When that bright, direct light hits the front of your lens, it doesn’t all pass through to your eye. A big chunk of it bounces right back toward my camera. That reflection is the white, blown-out blob ruining your photo. It hides your eyes, which is where 90% of the connection in a portrait happens. I’ve seen brilliant engineers look like ghosts in their own headshots because of two circles of glare.
Here’s the specific mistake: placing lights directly in front of you at head-height. That’s the default for a simple setup, and it’s a glare guarantee. The light source, your glasses, and my lens form a perfect triangle for reflection. You can tilt your head or the glasses, but then you look strained. The real fix isn’t a contortion act—it’s on the glasses themselves.
The One Coating That Solves 95% of Glare
Anti-reflective coating. That’s it. It’s a microscopic, multi-layer film vacuum-bonded to your lenses. Instead of light bouncing off a single hard surface, the coating creates destructive interference. Waves of light cancel each other out. The physics is cool, but the result is simple: light passes through instead of bouncing back.
I tell every client with glasses to get AR-coated lenses for their next prescription. The cost is usually between $50 and $120, depending on your optician. It’s the single best investment for your professional image, far better than a new shirt. I shot a financial advisor last month who had old, uncoated lenses. We struggled for 20 minutes, angling lights. He came back a week later with new AR-coated glasses, and we nailed the shot in three minutes flat. The difference wasn’t subtle; it was the difference between an amateur snapshot and a professional portrait.
How to Check Your Current Lenses for Coating
Don’t guess. Do this test right now under any overhead light. Take your glasses off and look at the reflection of the light on the lens. Tilt them slowly.
- Bad news: You see a bright, sharp, white reflection. That’s bare plastic or glass. These lenses will glare horribly under my lights.

If you see stark white reflections, book your headshot session for after your next optometrist appointment. Trying to “fix it in Photoshop” adds hours of tedious work and often looks fake.
The Common Mistake: Using Polarized Sunglass Lenses
This one wastes so much time. People think, “My sunglasses cut glare, so these will work.” Polarized lenses are designed to block horizontal light reflections—like glare off a lake. Studio lighting is not a lake. Worse, polarized lenses can create weird, rainbow-colored patterns called birefringence under artificial light. I once had a client show up with transition lenses that had darkened in the car. They acted like polarized lenses in the studio, creating a murky, patterned haze over his eyes that made him look alien. We had to scrap the shoot.
The rule is absolute: for a professional headshot, wear clear, AR-coated lenses only. If you absolutely must wear glasses for the shot and don’t have a proper pair, ask your optician for empty, coated frames. It’s a cheap and effective backup plan.
Uploading Glasses Photos Successfully
You’ve got your coated glasses. Now, let’s get the photo right for the software to work with. The goal is a clean, clear reference. Stand by a large window on a cloudy day, or in evenly lit shade. Do not use your phone’s flash—it will create a pinpoint glare even on coated lenses. Look directly at the camera. Take three shots: one straight on, one with a slight head turn to the left, one to the right.
Check each photo immediately. Zoom in. Your eyes must be visible and clear behind the lenses. If you see any bright white spots, that’s glare—move to different light. A soft, even glow on the lens is fine; a hot, sharp spot is not. Those clean reference shots give the technology the right map of your face, glasses and all, so the final result looks like you on your very best day.
Glare isn’t a mystery. It’s a physics problem with a straightforward solution. Get the coating on your lenses, provide a clean photo in soft light, and you’ll never have to worry about losing your eyes—and your connection—in a portrait again.
