Use the classroom furniture as a guide—if you’re standing where a student’s desk would be, the back wall is likely far enough away. Just turn around and check. Is there a distinct, dark outline of your shadow on the wall? Move forward until it disappears.

Final Check: Your Quick Three-Step Lighting Setup

Run this checklist before you hit the shutter or ask a colleague to take the shot. First, look at the window. Is the light even across your face, with no hot spots or bright patches? Second, feel the shadows. Is the shadow on the side of your nose a soft triangle (that’s good), or is it a hard, dividing line? Third, scan for color.
