The One Number That Changes Everything: 120 Nits
You spend an hour perfecting skin tones, getting that catchlight just right. You send the gallery. Your client texts back: “I look so orange!” Sound familiar? The problem isn’t your skill. It’s your screen’s brightness. Most monitors blast light at 250, 300, even 400 nits. That’s like editing a painting under a stadium floodlight. 120 nits is the industry standard for color-critical work. It’s the calm, consistent light level where your edits translate correctly to phones, laptops, and prints. Think of it as tuning your instrument before a concert. Everything else you do depends on this.
How to Find and Set Your Monitor's Brightness
First, you need a way to measure. Your monitor’s slider that goes from 0 to 100 is meaningless. Those are arbitrary units. You need a hardware colorimeter. I use a Datacolor Spyder. A used one costs about $80 online. It pays for itself in one saved reshoot. The process is simple: you plug the puck into a USB port, drape it over your screen, and run the software. It will guide you through a series of color tests and, crucially, tell you to lower your brightness until it hits that 120 nit target. You’ll be shocked. Your brilliant screen will suddenly look dim, almost dull. That’s correct. Your eyes will adjust in ten minutes.
No colorimeter right now? You can approximate. On a Mac, disable Auto-Brightness. Pull the brightness slider down until it’s about one-third of its full range. On a Windows PC, find the “SDR content brightness” slider in Display settings and set it to around 30. It’s a guess, but it’s closer to truth than the retina-searing default.
Why Your Living Room Lights Are Ruining Your Edits
Ambient light is a thief. It steals contrast and color accuracy from your screen. I once edited a headshot with a warm floor lamp glowing on the left side of my monitor. The photo looked perfectly cool and balanced to me. On my client’s neutral office monitor, she had a faint blue tint that made her look cold. The warm lamp had tricked my eyes into over-compensating. The rule is simple: edit in a consistently dim, neutral space. No windows behind you. No colorful walls reflecting onto the screen. A neutral gray wall is ideal. Dimmable, neutral-white LED bulbs overhead are perfect. Your editing cave doesn’t have to be pretty. It has to be consistent.
The Classic Mistake: Editing on a Glaring Screen
Here’s the before-and-after. Before calibration, you crank contrast and saturation to “pop” on your overly bright display. Shadows get crushed. Highlights get blown out because you’re trying to see detail your screen can’t show. You export. On a normal phone, the image looks flat, muddy, and lifeless. So you tweak, and the cycle continues. After setting to 120 nits, you edit with restraint. You see subtle gradations in a black suit jacket. You notice the precise point where a highlight on a cheek softens. Your edits become smaller, more surgical. The final file holds up everywhere because you built it on a stable foundation, not a funhouse mirror.
See What Your Client Sees on Any Device
Your final step is the device test. Before you deliver, do this: export the headshot and look at it on three things. First, your own smartphone. Second, a cheap tablet or an old laptop. Third, if you can, print a 4x6 at a local drugstore kiosk. Don’t judge the print quality—just look at the skin tone and brightness. What you’re checking for is consistency. If the face looks reasonably the same—not the same brilliant, but the same person—you’ve won. If your subject looks sickly on the phone but fine on your monitor, you know your screen is still lying. This test takes five minutes and saves your reputation.
Getting your monitor to 120 nits is the single most technical act of care you can offer a client. It moves your work from “looks good on my screen” to “looks right everywhere.” Start there. Everything else follows.
